NetFront Browser for Android: Hands-on

netfront

NetFront is a free browser for Android with a few features I haven't seen on any other browser. I took it for a spin, and created a gallery for your viewing pleasure. Now let's look at those features:

Tilt Mode

Reading webpage text on a tiny screen can be pretty irritating. In portrait mode, the characters are tiny -- and in landscape mode not many lines fit on the screen. Most people just make do with pinching-zooming and scrolling, but NetFront tries a different tack: it shows the lines diagonally.

That's right: Why pick just landscape or portrait, if you can read your text at a 45 degree angle? It looks as crazy as it sounds; I didn't edit the image linked - that's how it was on the screen.

While definitely an attention grabber, I wouldn't say this is a useful feature. It was really awkward to use, and I couldn't figure out how to scroll to the part I wanted to display. Still, NetFront does get points for effort here.

Bing update brings bookmarking of images and more

Now that Bing is available in the Android Market for all carriers, Microsoft is making sure its premiere search app is the best it can be. The big M has updated their app to bring users these new features:

  • What’s Nearby: Bing will automatically detect “what’s nearby” and present dynamic and full category search pages.
  • Bookmark Images: We know how much you love Bing images, and now you can bookmark any image result from the Web to the device.
  • Expand Your Search: The Search Widget allows you to search third party apps (e.g. Yelp), in addition to contacts, apps, audio files and the Web. (Only apps with registered data can be surfaced in search results.)
  • Search, Share, Decide and Book: To make planning a night out easier, share search results with friends using any loaded app that can accept and share content by using the “share” command. And, with the integration of OpenTable and GrubHub into the Bing for Mobile search results, you can make reservations or order take out – without switching between apps.

The Microsoft app has been under fire recently from the Android community (you guys) -- especially those on Verizon, who have been forced to use Bing's search functionality in many of Verizon's new Android phones. But to be honest, the app is really not that bad -- REALLY. Read our review here. Now play nice, and give it a chance. [Bing Community Blog]

Google Quietly Kills Their Creepy Latitude Location Alerts Feature

Back in February, we noted a sort of creepy feature of Google Latitude that was annoying some users: Location Alerts. The beta feature actually launched alongside the Location History feature the previous November, but it didn't get a lot of attention at the time. Then people started getting emails notifying them where their friends were ? without asking for such emails. Yeah, a little creepy. So it shouldn't be too surprising to hear that Google has quietly killed the feature. The only place Google noted this is on this page on their support site. As they write:

ExoPC now up for pre-order at Microsoft Store, shipping next week

Been waiting to order an ExoPC here in the US of A? Well, today is your day -- ExoPC has just announced that it's teamed up with Microsoft's very own store to bring you the 11.6-inch Windows 7 tablet. There's only one configuration at the moment, but $699 buys you a rather thin 0.5-inch slate with 64GB of flash storage, an Intel Atom N450 processor, 2GB of RAM, Windows 7 Home Premium with ExoPC's unique UI layer, and a front-facing 1.3 megapixel camera. As for that UI, ExoPC just told us that a major update should be coming next week and that it'll amend a number of issues we had with our early review unit. The slate is currently up for pre-order on the Microsoft Store website, but we're told it will start shipping out early next week. And if you're waiting to check it out in person before pulling out the plastic, we hear they should be arriving in all those Microsoft retail locations soon -- apparently, San Diego and Scottsdale already have 'em in stock. Hey, looks like Mr. Ballmer was right, we will have Win 7 tablets this "crucial holiday season."

Teach Parents Tech by Google helps you educate your folks

teachparentstech

Teach Parents Tech is a new website by Google, that lets you send your mom, dad, or other older relatives short videos showing basic computer skills.

The site itself is very friendly-looking; not just the part your mom and dad see, but also the interface used for selecting the videos you'd like to send them. It's built like a form letter, with an opening that goes "I'm really shocked\impressed\worried\jazzed that you've started using your computer these days". You can then select any number of videos to send from five different categories, including The Basics, Media, Finding Information, etc.

The videos each appear to be around the 40-second mark, with most starting off with a different Google nerd in front of the camera, so there's a human touch. After a couple of seconds explaining what the video is going to show, it switches to screencast mode (which is as polished as can be expected from Google), and shows how to perform one simple operation.

Having looked at videos showing how to change your wallpaper on Windows, take a screenshot on a Mac and check your email on your Android phone, they all seem simple enough. An example has been embedded after the jump for your perusal, showing you just how easy it is to adjust the time on your clock on a Mac.

Quite a lovely resource - kudos, Google!
